Earlier tonight, Australian brand Aje appeared at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia for the eighth time, kicking off the week with their Resort 2020 collection, ‘Bloomscape’ at the recently revamped Campbell’s Stores in The Rocks area.
It was a fitting place for Edwina Forest and Adrian Norris to open Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia’s resort season, cementing both their status as upcoming icons themselves and proving that Sydney really does have the most beautiful places for a fashion show.
The collection full of earthy tones paid tribute to the Australian land and people: thick cotton shirts with road sign patches including Perth and Alice Springs, was an obvious ode to the Australian bush, while native flora was plastered over some of the more bright and bold dresses and separates.
Balloon sleeves, topstitching, ruffles and pleats were seen throughout the collection — not a surprise, given Aje has a reputation for making pretty party dresses filled with personality — while oversized takes on suiting and utility-packed pockets also made an appearance.
The styling was minimal, with cinched white trousers and pocket-filled pants paired with cropped, tiered tops and wide, printed tops, and some models carried baskets of native flowers as they strode down the runway in strappy sandals.
The opening show of Australian Fashion Week is usually a showstopper – illustrating those statement pieces that buyers/attendees/fans want to run out and invest in to add to their own wardrobes, but for us, we felt that ‘Bloomscape’ was lacking in the inspiration department and did not make us look twice at any one piece.
Whilst the location provided a beautiful backdrop to the show, it felt like it was the only thing that really saved this collection from going forward to making a lasting impression.
